How deep does underground wiring need to be buried?
Burial depth depends on conduit type and what the run is serving. Direct-burial cable with no conduit requires 24 inches minimum under NEC. PVC Schedule 40 conduit drops that to 18 inches, and rigid metal conduit (RMC) can be installed at 6 inches. Circuits supplying 120V receptacles typically require 12 inches minimum. Local amendments sometimes add depth. We follow code and pull permits, the depth gets verified at inspection before we close the trench.
Can underground wiring be installed under a driveway or patio?
Yes, and this is where directional boring earns its cost. Rather than cutting and repaving, a boring machine pulls conduit under the obstacle with no surface damage. We use this method regularly on properties where trenching would require breaking concrete or pavers. The conduit must still meet burial depth requirements under the hardscape. What type of wire or conduit is used for underground runs?
The two main options are direct-burial cable (typically UF-B rated) and conductors pulled through conduit. Conduit, PVC Schedule 40 or 80, or rigid metal, offers better protection and makes future wire replacement possible without excavating. The choice depends on burial depth, exposure to physical damage, and local code. Aluminum conductors are sometimes specified for longer high-amperage runs; we'll explain the tradeoffs before any materials are ordered.
Does underground wiring require a permit?
In almost all jurisdictions around the Front Range, yes. Any underground electrical run that connects to a structure or sub-panel is a permitted installation requiring inspection before backfill. Working without a permit creates liability for the property owner and can affect insurance coverage and future home sales. All Electric handles the permit process as part of the job. How do I know if my underground wiring has failed or is damaged?
