More From Your Light Switches

Most homeowners don't need an electrician to swap a standard light switch, but most homeowners also haven't wired a three-way circuit, integrated a smart switch into a system without a neutral wire, or corrected a backstabbed connection that was a fire risk waiting to happen. When the job is straightforward, we'll tell you. When it isn't, you'll want a licensed electrician. All Electric holds CO License #ME.0600978, carries full insurance, and backs every installation with a 1-year labor warranty. Call (720) 951-4619 and we'll sort out exactly what your situation needs.

The scope of a light switch job varies more than most people expect. A basic single-pole replacement takes under an hour. A dimmer switch retrofit in an older home with aluminum wiring or a missing ground wire is a different conversation entirely. Smart switches that require a neutral wire often reveal wiring that wasn't run for them, and the fix for that isn't a workaround, it's proper wiring. What drives cost is mostly what's already in your walls: the number of switches in a circuit, the age of the home, whether the box is properly grounded, and how much access we have. Every job is different, contact All Electric for an accurate estimate.

What All Electric Installs and Upgrades

Every switch type, wired correctly the first time.

  1. Standard Single-Pole Switches

The most common switch in any home. We replace failed units, fix loose connections, and correct backstabbed wiring that the previous installer cut corners on. Simple job, but worth doing right.

  2. Three-Way and Four-Way Switches

Controlling one light from two or more locations is where DIY wiring most often goes wrong. We trace the full circuit, confirm the traveler wires are correct, and leave the switching logic working exactly as it should.

  3. Smart and Wi-Fi Switches

Smart switches integrate with systems like Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Apple HomeKit. Many require a neutral wire that older homes don't have at the switch box. We assess your existing wiring before recommending any model, and we install what will actually work.

  4. Dimmer Switches

Not every dimmer is compatible with every light fixture. We match the dimmer to your bulb type, check the load rating, and program the low-end trim so the lights don't flicker or buzz. See our dedicated dimmer switch service for the full scope.

  5. Motion Sensor and Occupancy Switches

Useful in garages, bathrooms, hallways, and exterior entry points. Motion sensor switches reduce energy use and add a layer of security, lights that respond to presence rather than habit. We program sensitivity and timeout settings before we leave.

  6. Timer and Schedule-Based Switches

Programmable switches let you set lighting schedules for occupancy simulation when you're traveling, or automate outdoor lighting so it turns off at sunrise. We configure the schedule as part of the install.

Integrating Smart Switches Into Your Existing System

standard single pole switches work, professional service in Denver, CO
Smart light switches can be seamlessly integrated into your existing smart home system. With a voice command or a tap on your phone, you control every light in the house without walking room to room. Create schedules, build scenes for different occasions, and check on your lights remotely when you're traveling. The catch: smart switches communicate over Wi-Fi or Z-Wave, and most require a neutral wire at the switch location. A lot of homes wired before the 1990s don't have that wire present. That doesn't make smart switching impossible. It means the installation needs to be assessed by someone who knows what they're looking at. All Electric has handled enough of these to know the difference between a clean install and a workaround that'll cause problems later. We don't do workarounds. If you're building out a broader setup, this pairs well with other electrical services throughout your home, outlets, circuits, and panel capacity all factor into how well a smart system actually performs.

Energy and Safety

Switches That Reduce Waste and Improve Safety

Four real benefits of upgrading beyond a basic toggle.

  • Lower Energy Bills

Motion sensor and timer switches ensure lights aren't running in empty rooms. Combined with LED-compatible dimmers, the energy savings over a year add up to something you'll notice on your utility statement.

  • Occupancy Simulation

Scheduled switches that vary lighting patterns while you're away are one of the most cost-effective home security upgrades available. No subscription, no monthly fee, just programming we set before we leave.

  • Eliminating Hidden Hazards

Backstabbed connections, where wires are pushed into the back of a switch rather than screwed to terminals, are common in homes built between the 1970s and 1990s. They loosen over time and create arc faults. Replacing the switch gives us the chance to fix the connection properly. Check our smoke and carbon monoxide detector page if you're doing a broader safety audit.

  • Code-Compliant Wiring Throughout

Every switch we install is wired to current NEC code and Colorado standards. If we open a box and find something that shouldn't be there, we tell you before we close it back up. CO License #ME.0600978 means we're accountable for what we leave behind.

Our Process

How a Switch Installation Works

  1. Step 1: Assess the Existing Wiring

Before any switch goes in, we check what's in the box: wire gauge, grounding, neutral availability, and whether the circuit is overloaded. Skipping this step is how people end up with smart switches that reboot constantly or dimmers that hum.

  2. Step 2: Install and Test

The switch goes in correctly, screwed terminals, not backstabbed, and we test the full circuit before closing the box. For smart and dimmer switches, we also calibrate the settings on-site so you're not troubleshooting after we leave.

  3. Step 3: Walk You Through It

If we installed something with settings you'll want to adjust, a timer, a motion sensor, a smart switch app, we walk you through it before the job is closed out. You shouldn't need to call us back for basic operation questions.

Frequently asked questions

Not answered here? Call (720) 951-4619 and ask the electrician.

Do I need a licensed electrician to replace a light switch?
For a simple single-pole swap in a home with modern wiring and a properly grounded box, many homeowners handle it themselves. But if you're dealing with a three-way circuit, aluminum wiring, a missing neutral wire for a smart switch, or a box that's been backstabbed, that's a job for a licensed electrician. Getting it wrong creates arc fault risk. All Electric holds CO License #ME.0600978 and can assess the situation before you open anything up. Every job is different, contact All Electric for an accurate estimate.
Why does my new smart switch need a neutral wire, and what happens if my home doesn't have one?
Most smart switches need a constant low-level current to stay connected to your Wi-Fi or Z-Wave network. That current travels through the neutral wire. Older switch boxes only have a hot and a switched hot, no neutral. Some smart switch brands offer 'no-neutral' models that work around this, but compatibility depends on the specific circuit and bulb type. We check what's actually in your box before recommending anything. Installing the wrong switch in a no-neutral setup causes flickering, random shutoffs, and shortened bulb life.
What is a backstabbed switch connection, and why does it matter?
Backstabbing is when a wire is pushed into a spring-loaded hole in the back of a switch instead of being looped around a screw terminal and tightened. It's faster during installation and completely legal under older code, but the connection loosens over time, creates resistance, and can cause arcing. In homes built between the 1970s and 1990s, backstabbed switches are common. When we replace a switch, we always rewire to screw terminals. It adds minutes to the job and eliminates a real hazard.
Can a dimmer switch be installed on any light fixture?
No. Dimmers must be matched to the bulb type and load. A dimmer rated for incandescent bulbs will cause LED fixtures to flicker or buzz, and some LED bulbs aren't dimmable at all regardless of the switch. Three-way dimmer circuits have additional compatibility requirements. We check the fixture wattage, bulb type, and circuit load before installing any dimmer, then calibrate the low-end trim on-site so the light transitions smoothly across the full range. Our dimmer switch service covers this in more detail.
How do motion sensor switches work, and are they right for every room?
Motion sensor switches use passive infrared (PIR) or ultrasonic sensors to detect movement and turn lights on automatically, then off after a set timeout period. They work well in garages, hallways, bathrooms, and utility areas where occupancy is intermittent. They're less suited to rooms where someone might sit still for long periods, a home office, for example, unless combined with an occupancy sensor that detects subtle movement. We configure sensitivity and timeout settings during installation so the switch behaves the way your household actually operates.
Can All Electric install smart switches compatible with my existing home automation system?
Yes. We install switches compatible with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, SmartThings, and other major platforms. Before recommending a specific switch, we confirm your Wi-Fi coverage at the switch location, check for a neutral wire, and verify the switch's app is compatible with your hub or voice assistant. If you're building out a broader smart home setup, that connects naturally to other circuits and appliance circuits throughout the home, all of which affect how the system performs overall.
