Smart Panel and Breaker Box Upgrades

Undeniably, the smart panel is reshaping what a breaker box can do, circuit-level energy monitoring, remote shutoffs, and load balancing that a standard 1980s panel simply cannot replicate. Accordingly, homeowners searching for smart panel installation or a straight 100A-to-200A upgrade are arriving at the same conclusion: the old box has to go. All Electric, CO License #ME.0600978, handles both. Subsequently, every installation carries a one-year labor warranty, and financing is available for larger panel work. Call (720) 951-4619 to schedule a free estimate.

Fortunately, not every panel situation calls for a full smart panel upgrade, and we'll tell you honestly which one your home actually needs. To clarify, the scope of a panel job depends on your current amperage, the age of your wiring, the number of circuits you're running, and whether your municipality requires a permit pull and inspection (it almost always does here on the Front Range). Costs vary widely based on those factors. Every job is different, contact All Electric for an accurate estimate. In the meantime, our electrical panels and breaker boxes guide walks through what to expect before we arrive.

Warning Signs Your Panel Needs Attention

These aren't quirks. They're your home telling you something is wrong.

  1. Crackling or Buzzing Sounds

Undeniably, a breaker box should be silent. Crackling or buzzing from the panel almost always means arcing. A direct fire hazard. Don't wait on this one.

  2. Rusted or Corroded Breakers

Corroded switches don't trip reliably. Subsequently, a breaker that won't trip under overload is no longer protecting your circuits, or your home.

  3. Warm Panel Door or Box

An unusually warm breaker box signals that heat is building up inside. Accordingly, that's a code concern and a safety concern simultaneously.

  4. Appliances Running Weak

If your HVAC, dryer, or refrigerator isn't pulling full power, the panel may be undersized for your load. Notably, this is one of the most common signs we see in homes with original 100A service.

  5. No Three-Pronged Outlets

Two-pronged outlets mean your home isn't grounded to modern standards. In short, that's an immediate concern for anything with a motor or a microprocessor.

  6. Zinsco or Fuse Box Still Installed

Zinsco electrical panels and older fuse boxes are known failure points that most insurers flag. Consequently, if your home still has one, a replacement isn't optional. It's overdue.

Our Process

How a Panel Upgrade Actually Works

Homeowners often expect a panel job to take days. Accordingly, most residential upgrades, including permit pull and inspection coordination, wrap in a single visit when the scope is clear upfront.

  1. Step 1: Site Assessment and Load Calculation

We inspect your current panel, measure your load, and confirm what amperage and circuit count your home actually needs. No guessing, no upselling circuits you don't require.

  2. Step 2: Permitted Installation

All Electric pulls the permit, performs the upgrade to NEC code, and coordinates the utility disconnect and inspection. The work is documented start to finish.

  3. Step 3: Final Inspection and Walkthrough

After the inspector signs off, we walk you through every circuit, label the panel clearly, and confirm everything operates correctly before we leave.

Smart Panels

What a Smart Breaker Panel Does Differently

rusted or corroded breakers work, professional service in Denver, CO
Undeniably, a standard panel upgrade moves you from undersized to code-compliant. A smart panel goes further. Specifically, brands like Span, Leviton, and Square D's QO series with smart breakers give you per-circuit monitoring through an app, so you can see exactly which circuit is drawing power and shut off individual loads remotely. Accordingly, that's meaningful if you're adding an EV charger or a whole-house generator and want to manage load priorities without a manual transfer switch. Notably, smart breaker panels also pair cleanly with solar and battery storage systems, which is a conversation we're having with more homeowners every season. Not every home needs a smart panel, but if you're already replacing an aging box, the incremental cost is worth discussing. Every job is different, contact All Electric for an accurate estimate.

Electrical Panel Questions We Hear Often

Not answered here? Call (720) 951-4619 and ask the electrician.

What's the difference between a smart panel and a standard 200A upgrade?
A standard 200A upgrade replaces your old panel with a modern breaker box at higher amperage, code-compliant, properly grounded, labeled correctly. A smart panel like Span or a smart breaker system from Square D adds per-circuit monitoring and remote control via an app. Undeniably, if you're managing an EV charger or battery storage, the smart panel's load-priority features justify the added cost for many homeowners. Every job is different, contact All Electric for an accurate estimate.
Do I need a permit for an electrical panel upgrade in Colorado?
Yes. Colorado requires a permit for any panel replacement or service upgrade, and a licensed electrical contractor must perform the work. Subsequently, an inspection by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) is required before the utility restores power. All Electric handles the permit pull and inspection scheduling on every panel job. It's not optional, and any contractor who skips it is leaving you with unpermitted work that surfaces at resale.
My home still has a Zinsco electrical panel: how urgent is the replacement?
Undeniably, Zinsco panels are a known safety hazard. The breakers in Zinsco panels are prone to failing to trip under overload, which means the circuit protection you're counting on may not work when you need it. Many homeowners insurance carriers will not cover a home with a Zinsco still installed, or they'll require documented replacement before renewal. In short, it's not a 'wait and see' situation. Contact us to schedule an inspection through our electrical repair or panel upgrades page.
What are the signs that a breaker box is failing versus just tripping normally?
Normal tripping means a circuit hit its limit and the breaker did its job. Failure looks different: breakers that trip repeatedly without an obvious cause, a panel that's warm to the touch on the door, crackling or buzzing sounds from the box, or breakers you have to hold in position to reset. Accordingly, those are hardware problems, not nuisance trips. If you're resetting the same breaker more than twice in a month, it's worth an inspection. See our circuit breaker finder resource for more detail.
Can I add circuits for an EV charger or new appliance without a full panel upgrade?
Possibly. It depends on how much headroom your current panel has and what your total connected load looks like. Specifically, a 200A panel that's already running close to capacity can't safely absorb a 50A EV charger circuit without load analysis first. We'll do a load calculation before recommending a full upgrade versus adding a dedicated circuit. If you don't need the full upgrade, we'll tell you. Every job is different, contact All Electric for an accurate estimate.
How long does a panel upgrade take, and will my power be out all day?
Most residential panel upgrades complete in four to eight hours, including the utility disconnect and reconnect window. Accordingly, the power is out during that window, typically three to six hours depending on your utility provider's scheduling. We coordinate the disconnect in advance so you know exactly when service goes off and when it's expected back. In short, plan for one workday. For older homes with wiring that needs correction alongside the panel, scope that with us before the appointment.
