Electrical work the licensed way

Electrical problems don't announce themselves with a clear label. A tripped breaker, a dead outlet, a circuit that won't stay on, tracking down the source takes the right tools and someone who knows how a panel is actually wired. At All Electric, we've been finding and fixing these problems for 9 years, and we back every job with a 1-year labor warranty. CO License #ME.0600978. Fully insured. If you're dealing with an electrical troubleshooting situation right now, call (720) 951-4619 and let's figure out what's going on.

Circuit breaker identification sounds simple, and sometimes it is. But in homes with older panels, unlabeled breakers, or circuits that were added over the years by different hands, it can get complicated fast. We use a circuit breaker finder tool to trace live circuits without shutting down the whole panel, matching each breaker to the outlets and fixtures it controls. From there, we can tell you if a breaker is healthy, failing, or undersized for what's plugged into it. Cost depends on panel size, the number of circuits, how the wiring runs, and how old the system is. There's a wide range once you factor in any repairs that turn up. Every job is different, contact All Electric for an accurate estimate.

Why accurate circuit mapping matters

undersized circuits work, professional service in Denver, CO
Most panels we see in the field have at least a few breakers with labels that don't match the circuits they control anymore. That's not a small thing. If your panel is mislabeled and something goes wrong, the wrong breaker gets switched off, and now whoever's working on that circuit thinks it's dead when it isn't. That's a serious safety issue, not a minor inconvenience. We trace each circuit with a breaker finder and a multimeter, confirm which outlets, lights, and appliances are on each leg, and relabel the panel correctly. It's the kind of work that makes every future electrical inspection go smoother, and it's the baseline for safe dedicated circuit additions down the road. Seriously, don't skip it.

How it works

Our circuit tracing process, step by step

Three steps, no guessing.

  1. Step 1: Transmitter on the outlet

We plug a signal transmitter into the outlet or fixture in question. It sends a detectable frequency through the wiring without cutting power to the circuit.

  2. Step 2: Receiver at the panel

Our technician runs the receiver across each breaker in the panel until it picks up the matching signal. Works on live circuits, labeled or not.

  3. Step 3: Label, test, document

Once we've confirmed the match, we label the breaker, test the circuit under load, and note anything that looks off, a failing breaker, a double-tapped wire, an undersized rating.

What we find

Problems that turn up during circuit tracing

Circuit tracing is often how we catch issues a homeowner didn't know to look for.

  1. Double-tapped breakers

Two wires connected to a single breaker terminal. Most breakers aren't rated for it. It's a code violation and a fire risk, and it's common in panels that have been modified over the years.

  2. Failing or weak breakers

A breaker that trips constantly, won't reset, or trips under normal load isn't doing its job. We test each one and tell you straight whether it needs to be replaced.

  3. Undersized circuits

A 15-amp breaker on a circuit running a refrigerator, microwave, or home office setup is going to cause problems. We note every case where the load doesn't match the rating.

  4. Missing or wrong GFCI protection

Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor circuits all require GFCI-protected outlet receptacles under current code. We flag anything that's missing it.

  5. Panel capacity issues

If your panel is out of open slots or running close to its rated amperage, we'll say so. That conversation leads directly to electrical panel replacement planning, not pressure, just facts.

  6. Wiring concerns

Aluminum branch circuit wiring, amateur splices, or improper wire gauges all show up when you're in a panel looking closely. We document what we see.

Six facts about circuit breaker services

Quick answers for homeowners researching this service.

  • Circuit tracing doesn't require a power shutoff

We use a live-signal transmitter, so we can identify circuits without cutting power to the rest of your home.

  • Unlabeled panels are common: and fixable

Homes with multiple owners or addition work often have panels nobody's fully mapped. We've seen it hundreds of times. It's a straightforward job for someone with the right tool.

  • A failing breaker won't always trip

Some breakers hold in place even when they've lost their ability to protect the circuit. The only way to know is to test them under load.

  • All work is permitted when required

Any repair or replacement that needs a permit gets one. We don't skip that step. It protects you at resale and keeps your insurance valid.

  • We carry a 1-year labor warranty

Every job All Electric completes comes with a 1-year warranty on labor. If something we touched isn't right, we come back and fix it.

  • Financing is available

For larger panel work that comes out of a tracing job, financing options are available. Ask when you call or book online.

Why choose a licensed local electrician for this

  1. Step 1: We know Front Range electrical codes

Local code requirements in Colorado are specific. A licensed contractor pulls the right permit, schedules the inspection, and closes the job properly, so you're not holding the bag at resale.

  2. Step 2: We don't guess and leave

We find the problem, explain it in plain language, and fix it before we go. If we find something we didn't expect, we tell you about it instead of ignoring it.

  3. Step 3: One call covers the whole panel

We're a residential and commercial electrician shop. If the circuit tracing job reveals a bigger issue, we can handle it same visit or schedule the follow-on work directly. No referral runaround.

Frequently asked questions

Not answered here? Call (720) 951-4619 and ask the electrician.

What does a circuit breaker finder actually do?
It's a two-part tool. You plug the transmitter into an outlet or connect it to a fixture, and it sends a detectable signal through that circuit's wiring. At the panel, the receiver picks up the signal at the correct breaker. The whole thing works on live circuits, so we don't need to shut your power down to trace individual breakers.
Can a breaker look fine but still be failing?
Absolutely. A breaker can hold in the 'on' position even after it's lost the internal mechanism that actually trips under overload. That means the circuit protection you think you have doesn't exist. We test each breaker under load, not just visually, which is the only reliable way to find one that's failed silently. Michelle Baker's visit is a good example: two faulty breakers found on a job that started as a general diagnostic.
What's a double-tapped breaker and why does it matter?
A double-tap is when two wires are landed on a single breaker terminal that's only rated for one. It's one of the most common code violations we find in panels that have been modified over the years. Most breakers can't maintain a reliable connection on two wires, which means the circuit protection is unreliable. It's a fixable problem, but it needs to be corrected, not ignored.
Do I need a permit to replace a single circuit breaker?
In most Colorado jurisdictions, replacing a like-for-like breaker inside an existing panel doesn't require a permit. But if we're adding a new circuit, upgrading a breaker to a higher rating, or doing any work that changes the panel configuration, a permit is typically required. We handle that paperwork when it's needed. We won't skip it to save time.
How does circuit tracing connect to a panel upgrade?
Often, the reason someone calls us about a mystery breaker is that their panel is at capacity and someone's been doubling up circuits to add outlets. When we trace those circuits, we get a full picture of the panel's current load and available capacity. If it's time for an upgrade from 100-amp to 200-amp service, that conversation comes from real data, not a sales pitch. See our electrical panel replacement cost page for more on what that work involves.
Does the circuit tracing service include a full panel inspection?
When we're at the panel, we look at the whole thing, not just the one breaker you called about. We note double-taps, failing breakers, missing ground wires, improper wire gauges, and anything else that's out of code. You get a clear picture of your panel's condition, not just the answer to the one question you called with. A full electrical inspection is also available if you want a documented report.
