What 240V Outlet Installation Costs

A 220 and 240 volt outlet are the same thing. The term shifted over the decades as utility voltage standards were standardized, but the outlet your electric dryer needs is identical to what your range or window AC unit requires. These aren't regular 120V household outlets. They run on two hot legs from your panel, require a dedicated circuit, and cannot safely be improvised or bypassed. If an appliance calls for one, there's no workaround. All Electric installs these circuits correctly the first time, with work covered by a 1-year labor warranty. Call (720) 951-4619 and we'll tell you exactly what your situation requires.

240V outlet installation cost varies based on several real factors: how far the new circuit has to run from your electrical panel, whether your panel has capacity for the additional load, what gauge wire the appliance demands, and whether any drywall or finished surfaces need to be opened to route conduit. A straightforward dryer outlet replacement in a laundry room close to the panel is a much simpler job than running a new 50-amp circuit to a detached garage for a welder or EV charger. Costs can range from a few hundred dollars on the simple end to well over a thousand on a longer, more involved run. Every job is different, contact All Electric for an accurate estimate.

Appliances That Need a Dedicated 240V Circuit

If your appliance has a large plug with three or four prongs, it almost certainly needs its own 240V circuit.

01

Dryer Outlets

Most electric dryers need a 30-amp, 240V circuit. Older homes sometimes have a 3-prong outlet; new appliances expect 4-prong. We replace outdated receptacles and upgrade the circuit where needed.

02

Range and Oven Circuits

Electric ranges typically require a 50-amp circuit. That's not something you can share with another appliance. We run a dedicated line from your panel with the right wire gauge and install the correct receptacle.

03

Air Conditioners

Large window units and mini-split systems often exceed 120V capacity. We size the circuit to the unit's actual draw, not a rough guess, so you don't trip breakers every time the compressor kicks on.

04

EV Chargers and Shop Equipment

Level 2 EV chargers and workshop tools like table saws and air compressors are among the fastest-growing reasons homeowners need new 240V circuits. See our full EV charger installation service for details.

How It Works

How We Install a 240V Circuit

There's a right way to do this, and shortcuts that create real danger. Here's what a proper installation looks like from start to finish.

  1. Step 1: Panel Assessment

We start at your breaker box. We verify available capacity, check for any existing issues, and confirm the panel can safely support the new load. If it can't, we say so before any work begins.

  2. Step 2: Circuit and Wire Routing

We run the correct gauge wire, 10-gauge for a 30-amp dryer circuit, 6-gauge for a 50-amp range circuit, from the panel to the outlet location. Finished walls are patched cleanly when we're done.

  3. Step 3: Outlet Installation and Testing

We install the correct NEMA receptacle for your appliance, connect and torque every terminal properly, and test the circuit under load before we leave. The work is permitted where required and inspected by a licensed electrician under CO License #ME.0600978.

What the Work Actually Looks Like

dryer outlets work, professional service in Denver, CO
We get called out regularly to fix 240V outlet installs that someone else rushed through. Wrong wire gauge. Missing ground. A 3-prong outlet where a 4-prong is now code. Breaker sized to the wire and not the appliance. These aren't cosmetic problems. They cause tripped breakers at best and house fires at worst. When All Electric does a dedicated circuit installation, every connection is torqued to spec, every wire is labeled, and the outlet matches what your appliance actually needs. Financing is available if the scope of work runs larger than expected. Ask us when you call.

Common Questions About 220 and 240V Outlet Installation

Not answered here? Call (720) 951-4619 and ask the electrician.

Is a 220 outlet the same as a 240V outlet?
Yes. The names are interchangeable. Years ago, residential voltage was commonly described as 220V; the industry settled on 240V as the standard label. Your electric dryer, range, or air conditioner doesn't care what you call it, but the circuit serving it must be correctly sized and wired for that voltage level. A standard 120V household outlet is a completely different animal.
Are there different types of 240V outlets?
There are several NEMA configurations. A 30-amp dryer outlet (NEMA 14-30) is different from a 50-amp range outlet (NEMA 14-50), which is also the outlet used for Tesla and most other Level 2 EV chargers. Hot tubs often require a 60-amp dedicated circuit with a disconnect. The wrong receptacle for the appliance is a code violation, not just an inconvenience, we match the outlet to what the appliance actually requires.
How hard is it to get a 240V outlet installed?
That depends almost entirely on your panel. If you have open breaker slots, available ampacity, and the outlet location is close to the panel, it's a clean half-day job. If the panel is full, if the circuit has to run through a finished basement or crawl space, or if your service entrance is undersized, the scope grows. We assess your panel first and give you a straight answer before any work begins. Check our residential electrical services for the full picture.
Can I install a 240V outlet myself?
Legally and safely, no. In Colorado, 240V circuit work requires a licensed electrical contractor and a permit in most jurisdictions. Beyond legality, the risk is real: wrong wire gauge causes overheating, improper grounding is a shock hazard, and an incorrect breaker size can fail to protect the circuit. The permit process exists to get the work inspected by someone who's accountable. We handle the permit and the inspection. You don't have to manage any of it.
What if my electrical panel doesn't have room for another circuit?
That's more common than most homeowners expect, especially in homes built before the 1990s. A full panel isn't the end of the road. In some cases we can add a sub-panel to create additional capacity. In others, the right answer is a full panel upgrade. We'll look at what you have, tell you what your options are, and let you decide. We don't push work that isn't warranted.
Does a new 240V circuit require a permit?
In most Colorado municipalities, yes. Adding a new circuit or replacing an existing one typically requires a permit and an inspection. Skipping that step isn't a bargain. It creates problems when you sell the home and may void your homeowner's insurance in the event of a fire. All Electric pulls the permit when one is required. It's part of doing the job correctly under CO License #ME.0600978.

What wire gauge does a 240V outlet use?
It depends on the amperage. A 30-amp dryer circuit requires 10-gauge wire. A 50-amp range or EV charger circuit requires 6-gauge. Using undersized wire on a higher-amperage circuit is one of the most common DIY mistakes we come across. The wire must match the breaker, and the breaker must match the load. We size everything correctly from the panel out.
